John Louis "Jack" Laterra, Jr., age 67, a former longtime resident of Old Saybrook passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Touchpoints Rehabilitation at Manchester in Manchester. Jack was the beloved husband of the late Lauren "Laurie" (Castanza) Laterra who predeceased him on July 23, 2013. Jack was born in Norwich on January 22, 1950 the son of Mary (Valaski) Laterra of Waterford and the late John L. Laterra. He grew up in Franklin and graduated from Norwich Free Academy. Jack retired in December of 2014 from Salem Prime Cuts after many years as a meat cutter. Jack was a Veteran Firefighter having joined the Old Saybrook Fire Department on February 3, 1973. In his tenure in the Fire Department he served 2 years as 2nd Assistant Chief, 3 years as 1st Assistant Chief and 5 years as Deputy Chief. Jack left active duty and moved to the Department's Veterans List in 1994 after 20 years of service. He returned in 2010 as a Support Member serving several years as a member of the Fire Police where he received awards as Top Responder and Unit Citations for service during Hurricanes Irene and Sandy. Jack proudly served the Department and the Old Saybrook community for 24 years. Besides his mother Mary, Jack is survived by his sisters, Janet Arnone and her husband Frank, of Pompano Beach, Florida and Chesterfield, Virginia and Roxy Laterra and her husband Tom Winslow, of Nantucket, Massachusetts, his nephew, Dwight Arnone of Florida and Virginia and his niece, Ashley Arnone, of Virginia, and many cousins and friends . Visitation will be held on Monday, August 28, 2017 from 5:30PM to 7:30PM at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook. Jack's funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 10:30AM in the funeral Home chapel with a reception following. Private burial will be held in the Resurrection Cemetery in Westbrook. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Old Saybrook Fire Company #1, 310 Main Street, Old Saybrook, CT 06475.
